Invisible Island
Banjar Tiagan, Nusa Penida. To many this place does not exist but for us it is more real than any other place in the world. We have merged into this community and been welcomed by it with open arms. A group of 17 strangers were accepted with joy into the families of those who remain invisible to the rest of the world. Given the privilege to work side by side them at their request and on their time – Rubber Time.
Signing up for a Community Service trip on this island that did not exist to me at the time boggled my mind with expectations, doubts and goals. All the expectations of the people, both of Tiagan and the group, were easily surpassed. Doubts and fears shattered even easier. Goals constantly raised to fit the ever-changing dynamics of this exotic new world. Although a month away from home, half way around the world, may seem a daunting task, it became my main motivator. The motivation that stemmed from the excitement of understanding the unknown, to challenge my perspective and to achieve more than I ever thought possible. This experience has given me more than I could ever feasibly give back to this community- for that I am grateful. It has opened my eyes to what it truly means to be privileged. It has nothing to do with lifestyle or the amount of money in a bank account; it has everything to do with the opportunities that one has the chance to utilize. To be accepted and grow in a foreign community is the greatest opportunity and privilege that I have ever been given. Banjar Tiagan is not just a dot on a map; it is truly a home away from home.
