Some family friends (mom and two teen sons) recently flew to Seattle and rented a car with the intention of driving down the west coast of the US over a two-week period. She became sick and needed one of the boys to drive. She had to pay a large surcharge to have her oldest boy drive - here is an article that details age requirements of the big rental car companies.

Its really nice and

Its really nice and informative topic. In the United States, an estimated 34% of consumers (in 2006) are buying a Vehicle history report for used cars. Vehicle history reports are one way to check the track record of any used vehicle. The growth of the Internet has fueled the availability of information on the prices of used cars. This information was once only available in trade publications that dealers had access to. There are now numerous sources for used car pricing. Multiple sources of used car pricing means that listed values from different sources may differ.

This would be possible

This would be possible if almost all private cars requiring drivers, which are not in use and parked 90% of the time, would be traded for public self-driving taxis that would be in near constant use. Several of the services, most notably those in the United Kingdom and the United States, sell reports to dealers and then encourage the dealers to display the reports on their Internet sites.

Student Car Rentals & Young

Student Car Rentals & Young Driver Car Rentals

Car Rental Express companies seek to provide exceptional service and rates for all customers, regardless of age.

Young Drivers

By definition, young drivers are usually those customers between the ages of 18-25 years old. Many large national car rental companies do not rent to young drivers, however agencies with Car Rental Express strive to help them. Each agency has its own age limits and rates, but they generally recognize and aim to suit the needs of young drivers.

Young Driver Issues

There is a common belief that young drivers are not as responsible on the road as their older counterparts – something that Car Rental Express knows is not true. That being said, there are driving problems associated with young drivers that must be addressed:

    * Excessive Speed - we urge young renters to obey speed limits.
    * Alcohol - Approximately 30 percent of accidents among young drivers in the United States are a direct result of alcohol usage, which is why Car Rental Express agencies, along with all states and provinces, have zero tolerance for alcohol consumption while operating their cars. Operating a car under the influence of alcohol voids most insurance coverage programs, leaving an intoxicated driver fully liable for all costs, if they cause an accident.
    * Seat belts – It is imperative to buckle-up while on the road.

The weight of a car

The weight of a car influences fuel consumption and performance, with more weight resulting in increased fuel consumption and decreased performance. The societal benefits may include: economy benefits, such as job and wealth creation, of automobile production and maintenance, transportation provision, society wellbeing derived from leisure and travel opportunities, and revenue generation from the tax opportunities.

The bottom line is younger drivers are fearless and will take more risks while driving a motor vehicle. Yes there are probably a small percentage of 16 - 24 year old drivers that are excellent drivers. But insurance companies are in business to make money not help you out. They base all their figures on stats and that is the bottom line. I think prices across the board for all insurances health, life, and car can be outrageous but unless you can afford to be self-insured you just have to accept it. It's just like paying taxes, we hate to but have too.

Unfortunately, according to the CDC, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to crash.

Furthermore, drivers 15-24 years of age represent only 14% of the U.S. population but account for 30% ($19 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among males and 28% ($7 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries among females.

So it's not a surprise to see the rental companies charging extra for young drivers...

The best thread factor in this regard is that the teenage driving will became dangerous because they mostly drive as fast & furious as in Hollywood movies. So always drive safely & slowly.

I find this very shocking. People drive at early ages, it should be fine. It's not like he was driving alone.. hmm.. weird!!

What the deal with rental cars and students? Seems like they should be easy to get as many teens have been driving since they were 15.

Also hear that zip cars are really tough to get, even though they have offices on lots of college campuses where many kids are under 20 years old. Has anyone done this lately. How did it go?
