Enjoy Trains and Theatre in Maine for the Holidays from $160/N
All Aboard! The Maine Narrow-Gauge Railroad (207/828-0814) on Fore Street is home to the defunct railroad cars that once plyed the route of the Edaville Railroad in Carver, Massachusetts. The two-mile twenty-minute ride on these old-fashioned, toy-like trains is a ride into the past, but with today's views of Casco Bay, the harbor, lobster boats and the working of modern day Portland.
If you're visiting between Thanksgiving and Christmas, don't miss a ride on their seasonal "Polar Express."
This year, the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine is joining Maine Narrow Gauge railroad to bring "Polar EXpress," the classic holiday tale, to downtown Portland.
Beautiful decorations along the waterfront route will light up the night.
Guests of all ages can meet the conductor, have hot chocolate and cookies, watch a theatrical reading of the magical story, and sing holiday carols. Your kids will be thrilled when the train pulls into the North Pole station, where Santa will hop aboard. Back at the station, those who want an official photo with Santa can wait their turn. The Polar Express will run through Wednesday December 23rd.
For 2009, general admission tickets cost $30.25 per adult; or $28.25 for each child 1-12 years. Kids under 12 months who are sitting in parent's lap do not need a ticket. There is limited First Class seating at the price of $44.25 for adults or children, these riders get a souvenir mug.
Another cultural treat is the "Magic of Christmas" show put on by Portland Symphony Orchestra in Portland. It plays nightly from December 11-20 and is a real treat for older kids.
