If you want a peaceful few days of long walks on the beach and beautiful sunsets each evening, head to the Palm Island Resort in Cape Haze, Florida. It isn't easy. 

We hated the Florida heat in June, and the busy Miami Airport with its thousands of travelers.  Then, we missed the boat bound for Knight Island and the resort.

At the resort, there are one, two and three-bedroom villas and a long, private, white sand beach that's really pretty. You can play tennis, fish, or take out a boat or canoe.  I enjoyed the relaxation but the kids, then 11 and 12, could have used a little more excitement. They were entertained by driving the resort's golf cart and studying the different seashells. Since our visit, I understand they have added a kids club and it's a good thing. There are also some nature programs and a golf course nearby. 

The things we enjoyed doing together in the area include visiting Naples, shopping at the Flea Market, and touring the Edison/Ford Home and Museum.
