Bus Bazaar Lee: New York To Atlantic City
Atlantic City, the Sodom for gamblers, New York's spring break getaway on the cheap, and my next destination aboard the Greyhound Line.
Three seats in front of me sits Greyhound's CEO, Dave Leach and the line's COO, Bill Blankenship. Mr. Leach started his career with the company in Canada a year before I was even born. Mr. Blankenship, who joined Greyhound in '96, is ripe for the one-on-one grilling later: he received his degree in one of my most favored destinations, Louisiana.
Lyon, our expert driver who has navigated us through the city within minutes, has purportedly been a bell ringer for the New York Stock Exchange and was one of the first to have driven with the Greyhound busline in the United Kingdom.
From my bus seat, the setting is not much different from that of Megabus or Bolt, except, of course, for the fact that the overhead reading lights actually work and the power outlets don't have safety pins jammed in them.
It's an excitable crowd behind me, many I'm sure who are escaping the miserable city weather to enjoy more miserable weather in a slightly more luxurious setting - that is, if you enjoy casinos, spa massages and a night of what-happens-in-Atlantic-City-may-not-be-far-enough-from-home-to-stay-in-Atlantic-City kind of going-ons.
