Germany In Summer: Arts Festival Fever

If medieval castles or jazz festivals interest you, then southern Germany may be the vacation spot for you.

Travelers seeking a more local, intimate cultural experience can add a visit to the nearby state of Baden-Wurttemberg in southern Germany. Well-known for historic cities like Stuttgart, Heidelberg, and Freiburg, for its famed Black Forest region, and more than 60 palaces and castles brimming with history and lore, Baden-Wurttemberg's numerous summer and fall festivals burst with drama, dance, music, pageantry and culinary delights.

With the arrival of summer, these city streets, practically unchanged since Medieval and Renaissance times, become a setting for parades, jousting tournaments and festivals ranging from professional theatrical productions, concerts and sword-fights staged in Medieval castles to music and jazz festivals set in the open countryside.

Events, scheduled to take place from early June until mid-October; include the largest wine festival in Germany, the Baden Grand Prix Week of International Horse Racing, the second-oldest German film festival, fireworks displays and the second largest beer festival in the world.

For more information, brochures of special tour packages, and rates to Baden-Wurttemberg and the Black Forest, contact the German National Tourist Office online or at 212/661-7200.
