Family Car Games - The ABCs Game
Antsy backseat passengers can make road trips the most exhausting of family vacations, but this classic car game will make the miles whizz by.
There's no better opportunity than a long road trip to reinforce learning. That's why we love the ABCs game -- it's a fun way to practice the alphabet and help our tinies travelers remember their ABCs.
So remember our forefathers --put away the electronics, unplug the backseat and get everyone involved in an old-fashioned car game.
Car Games: Our Favorite ABC's Game for the Backseat
If you're traveling with kids who have recently learned the alphabet -- or even older kids in the mood for some fun competition -- this game works well for long car rides. The rules are simple and everyone can play.
• Before departure, visit this link for a printable brochure of the ABC's Car Game with all the letters of the alphabet. We have used graphical images, so all ages -- even early readers -- can have a way to keep score throughout your trip.
• Print out several copies because this is one game that you can play over and over.
• Hand out a pen (crayons are okay) and a copy of this brochure, or some paper, to each player.
• Players must be on the lookout for letters; you can find them anywhere: on signs, billboards, bumper stickers, etc.
• Once you spot a letter for the first time, jot it down on your list. Be quick, so other passengers don't claim it first.
• The first person to cover the alphabet from A to Z is victorious.
• Prizes can be distributed at mom’s or dad's discretion, or you can put big siblings in charge.
More Car Games for the Backseat
For a variation on this theme, download a printable brochure of the License Plate Car Game and print out several copies. It has the License Plate Game rules and pictures of America's 50 license plates. While many states have a variety of images on their license plates, even your youngest passengers will probably spot some, and this favorite car game can be enjoyed over and over.

Family Car Games app - available soon for Kindle
Families who play games may enjoy the app my family created, with instructions for 100 games families can play while in the car...no equipment needed, not even the iPhone (once you've read the instructions and figured out how to play). There are many new, original games...including some that use the car radio...storytelling games, guessing games, singing games, creative and brain-expanding games...as well as a few old faves.
Created by two teens and their parents (who both have grad degrees in education and are a published author and recorded songwriter)...and road-tested for four years!
It's been recommended by Kathy Peel, AOL's parenting coach, galavante.com, FoxNews.com, Women's Day.com, the AppCast, and other parenting and travel blogs.
If you'd like to buy an app that'll give you and your kids a choice of 100 games, most of them games the driver can play too...with no squabbling over or staring at the iPhone...try Family Car Games, available from the App Store.
