Spa Pampering For Tweens And Teens
Spa resorts across the country are catering to a growing demographic - tweens and teens, girls and boys, looking for fun, self-indulgence and luxury.
When the experts at SpaFinders told us that one of the top trends for 2004 was “spas for the whole family,” we decided to dig a little deeper. We found that following the growing popularity of beauty treatments for teen girls, destination spas have unveiled new, more comprehensive packages for family members of all ages.
In the years since, we've seen Carnival Cruise ships opening onboard teen wellness treatments, and much more variety in the offerings for under-18s. Now, various resorts with in-house retreats will do pedicures, manicures, blonde streaks and deep tissue massage on boys or girls 8+ years, with or without their parents. Teen girls still rule, though, in having the greatest variety of choices at spas around the country.
California
The famous Hotel Del Coronado (619/522-8100) now has a few spa packages specifically for the age 15-18 set. (Keep in mind that this resort is one of the Top 20 Spas in the World as chosen by Travel + Leisure.) There's the standard "Teen Spa Sampler," including massage, body polish, manicure, and facial. The "Point Break" caters to sporty teens with a mud wrap, scalp massage, and neck, shoulder, and arm massage. "Back from the Beach" offers hand and foot exfoliation and massage after a long day in the sand.
The Hyatt Huntington Beach's Pacific Waters Spa (714/698-1234) has a distinct "SophistiSpaKids" menu for ages 4-18. In addition to more standard treatments, younger guests can get nail art, beach braids, or a "Teen Clean Regime" facial with skin analysis and take-home kit. Or a birthday girl and six of her friends may partake in manicures followed by cake and soda as part of the "It's My Party and I'll Spa if I Want To" package.
Florida
The popular Hawks Cay Resort in the Florida Keys offers Indies Teen Spa (305/743-7000) packages inspired by the spa’s tropical West Indies-like location, with a “Friends Time Out” treatment geared to buddies ages 8-15 who want to enjoy a facial or massage together. Individual teens can visit the salon for options like make-up lessons and nail art.
The independently-owned Nickelodeon Family Suites has renovated the Kidspa that was popular at its predecessor hotel (the Holiday Inn Family Suites Resort) and gone a step or two further. Unique offerings in Orlando, we quickly became used to their glitter makeup sessions and temporary blond hair rinses and now there's more. Courtesy of perky staff who look surprisingly like Angelica and Dora the Explorer, boys and girls of all ages can be treated to face painting, hair-braiding, manicures and pedicures, with more ideas sure to follow.
New Hampshire
Mt. View Grand's Tower Spa (800/438-3017) is the only spa in the United States with every room equipped for side-by-side treatments. This distinction makes it the perfect place for a "Mother and Daughter" package, with aromatherapy massages, facials or manicures/pedicures, and a spa cuisine lunch. Spa services are limited to teens ages 16 and older.
North Carolina
You may have heard of Pinehurst (800/ITS-GOLF) as being a world-class golf resort and site of the U.S. Open. But did you know that Pinehurst's Spa has its very own "TeenSpa Lounge", reserved for guests ages 12-17? In addition to what are becoming standard teen spa treatments, Pinehurst offers a typical "Mother and Teen Daughter Re-TREAT" package. Through the "Friends Always and Forever" package for birthday parties or proms, staff members will take photos to preserve the memories.
Pennsylvania
Now the celebrated Canyon Ranch Spa, with top health and wellness resorts in Lenox, Massachusetts and Tucson, Arizona--as well as satellite spas at the Gaylord Palms Orlando and on the Queen Mary 2--has made this a full time thing. Teens 13-17 are invited to spend from two to six weeks on the Bryn Mawr College campus at Canyon Ranch’s special venture: Smarter Minds & Bodies Residential Camp. Weekly sessions throughout the summer months focus on high energy sports like kick boxing, rock climbing and strength training, with stretching, golf, meditation and cooking classes--plus pedicures and facials--to enhance the wellness experience.
As Canyon Ranch explains to its clients, “You know how a Canyon Ranch vacation... can chart the course of your year and even your life. Give your kids that same advantage at a time in their lives when they can really use it.” The camp is managed by Julian Krinksy Camps and Programs; contact them at (866/879-5527) or visit www.jkcp.com for rates and information.
Turks & Caicos
The lush Palms Resort (866/877-7256), which opened on Providenciales, the main T&C island in 2005, got into the spa game very quickly. In a relaxing environment designed by the woman who brought us the classic Golden Door, the 25,000-square-foot Spa at The Palms features massage treatments in the Swedish style, as well as acupressure, reflexology and deep tissue techniques. Young women may want to avoid the "Conchology Mother of Pearl Scrub" in favor of a Princess Make-Over Party, a 2.5-hour session ($150) that promises a facial, makeup lesson, new hairstyle and blow dry, manicure and pedicure. If that's too much, boys and girls will surely go for the 50-minute Special Sports Massage. Tiny siblings 3-8 years can pass the time at Little Yogis, the resort's yoga class for preschoolers (minimum of six students, parents must be present, $12 per class).
Vermont
TopNotch at Stowe (802/253-6463) offers a Super Sugar Scrub for teens with pure maple sugar--then cornmeal soap and a loofah mitt to bring home. The Teen Tune-Up with a personal trainer also results in something to take home--a personalized exercise program. The Teen Time Out package offers the best of TopNotch's spa treatments for younger guests. The spa itself features several private spa lounges with fireplaces, steam, sauna, Jacuzzis, and juice bars.
West Virginia
The Greenbrier (800/453-4858) resort caters to moms and daughters with a colossal pamper-together package including pedicure, manicure, mineral bath, facial, eye treatment and Swedish massage. Kids age 6-10 can opt for a mini manicure and pedicure with accompanying take-home products, while teens have their own manicures, pedicures, facials, and make-up, like at many spa salons.

This design is wicked! You most certainly know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost...HaHa!) Wonderful job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
